(CNN) — Two men were killed and several others injured in a shooting Sunday morning in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood, according to Toronto police.
A man left the parking lot of a Greektown restaurant in a van, then exited the vehicle and began firing shots at people around 7:20 a.m. local time, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said.
Residents across the city of 2.7 million took to social media to describe their frustration and fear amid the tragedy.
“I’m just so sad, just watching the news. A lot of my friends are at this location, and it’s just so crazy,” Kayleen Woodhead, a resident in Toronto, said.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians were “shocked and saddened” by the news.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We’re monitoring the situation closely,” Trudeau said in a statement.
Saunders said two people have been taken into custody. He said police are investigating whether the men are connected to the Greektown shooting. Police believe the van was stolen prior to the shooting.
Media reports initially indicated that the shooting was caught on video. Saunders later said the video does not definitively show the shooting. He would not say whether the video captured the vehicle used in the shooting.
Saunders said the two people taken into custody are cousins. He said he does not have additional information to provide on the conditions of the other people who were injured.
One man who was at the restaurant said that his wife was sitting in the front seat of their car, which was parked in front of the restaurant.
“We heard a gunshot and my wife looked back and the guy who was robbing the store had a gun,” said Rodney Holt, 52. “He shot my wife’s car — right in front of me — and then ran over her foot.
“The cops came and arrested him, but my wife’s foot was messed up.”
Holt’s wife was unharmed, but was shaken up, he said.
‘A perfect storm’
What appears to be a video of the shooting posted to Facebook appears to show a dark vehicle pursuing a line of at least two pedestrians, then abruptly stopping in the middle of the street. Three men fall to the ground in quick succession, then a man who appeared to be the shooter gets out of the vehicle and runs back to the vehicle with a firearm in his hand.
Holt said he was at the restaurant with other friends having drinks at the time of the shooting.
“There was a shooter shooting at a crowd of people. I was sitting right there on the back patio,” Holt said.
Toronto Mayor John Tory told reporters he thought it was “one of the worst cases of gun violence that I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Tory said he had been in contact with the mayor of Paris, who offered Toronto support following the shooting. The city has experienced similar gun violence in the past, he said.
“We don’t know all the details, but it’s certainly an incident that calls for a response. And one that I think Toronto’s got,” Tory said.
“As I just told the mayor of Paris, we really need to do everything we can to lock up dangerous people — violent people — and make it hard for them to get guns,” Tory said.

Tory and Toronto Police Services’ Chief Saunders said on Twitter that the victims of the shooting were taken to area hospitals and the area was closed.
Sunday’s shooting follows an incident on June 17 in which two 15-year-old girls were shot and killed after leaving a shopping mall in Toronto. A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting.
In March, 12 people were shot and killed and four wounded during a shooting rampage at a mosque in Quebec City.
Sunday’s shooting took place on a busy Sunday morning in the busy Toronto neighborhood of Greektown. Saunders had said he expected the area would be “very, very quiet” until early afternoon.
He said two locations had been involved in the shooting. CNN has not been able to identify the locations due to the ongoing investigation.
