The C.E.O. Other C.E.O.s Turn to for Advice By Phillip Hunter for Forbes.com
In order to succeed in business you need to be a team player, especially if you want to have a successful company. And if you want to advance in your position within the company, you need to know how to learn from others. It’s true that it’s good to keep your own counsel, but learning from others can help get the best out of you when you are working with others.
Author, visionary, and C.E.O. Other C.E.O.’s Perspective to Success author Phillip Hunter believes that you need to take time to ask for advice from those who are successful in their professions.
“Be open to helpful criticism and input from people you respect,” says Hunter, who has many national and international business awards to his credit. “You can’t write the book on what the best business opportunities will be in the future.”
If you want to learn from others and be better, become a good team player. The ability to ask for the opinions of people who are respected in your field, and to receive good advice back, is essential for moving forward. Hunter also says that networking is a vital part of business and it’s important to learn how to network in order to connect with other people in the industry.
If you have great ideas, recognize that time away from the office to test them is key in success.
And one of the biggest mistakes that Hunter has found businesses make is asking others to come in and fix the products, but not having any legitimate plan to test them in the market before making them widely available.
Getting consistent ideas can be extremely difficult, and building a business is a constant process. And this is also the time when you have to be open to ideas, even if they may seem to be a bit wacky, or too extreme.
Hunter gives the example of a drug that can stop someone from contracting AIDS. The idea behind the drug is great, but the problem that Hunter found is that he would have to pay a lot of money for it, and if he didn’t do that, then he would have to set aside time to test it. If someone was to launch a new drug for HIV, the problem would be the same, but he would have to test it in thousands of people across the country, which would require a lot of money, making it virtually impossible to test it in markets around the world.
Instead of following this advice, Hunter says that the production of an AIDS drug should have been stepped down slowly. He says that this is what all companies should do, especially in trying to bring something new to the market.
If the latest news at any time is promising for a new product that you have ideas about, think about them before you invest too much money into it.
The C.E.O. Other C.E.O. perspective to success and networking is essential. People with different jobs and levels of experience will bring to you different perspectives to the business world.
