Footage filmed by an audibly astonished resident of an apartment block in Shanghai shows the ground floor of the five-storey building (above) descending to the floor below. The moment is captured when the lift, a sort of huge backpack that can move from place to place while making sure not to fall off, stops in its tracks. The camera moves to check the ground level, and suddenly, the ground rises up and starts descending towards the next. A strange effect seems to occur: though the ground must be falling on top of itself, it begins to gradually descend beneath the lift itself. “Why is this ceiling lifting off?” the resident asks astonished as she stands to look up at the spinning stairwell. The operator continues to button-click to keep the elevator on course. Suddenly, the lift moves off to its new destination. There, it seems to give way to the ground and the view of the city falls away. Perhaps, as most Chinese seem to think, the sky isn’t the limit.
